HISTORY – ACADEMIC PROFILE

Postgraduate Studies Program "Atmospheric Sciences and Environment"

The MSc Program “Atmospheric Sciences and Environment” of the Department of Physics of the University of Ioannina (UoI) was established in 1994 (Government Gazette 614/8-8-1994) and has been operating since then with continuous amendments and restructurings. According to Decision No. 14221 of the Senate of the University of Ioannina (meeting no. 1046/5/26-4-2018, Item 2), published in the Government Gazette 1884/B/24-5-2018, the MSc Program was re-established in 2018.

Its subject is the provision of specialized knowledge in Atmospheric Sciences and the Environment to graduates of departments of related disciplines, as well as the training and education of scientists at the postgraduate level in accordance with international standards, with the aim of acquiring the ability to conduct independent scientific research.

The objective of the MSc Program is to produce graduates who are familiar with the latest developments in the fields of Atmospheric Sciences and the Environment and who possess the necessary knowledge to produce original research in these fields and to contribute to related issues. Graduates of the Program are thoroughly trained according to international standards and are capable of successfully meeting the demands of their future employment in sectors related to the Program.

Its establishment is aligned with the strategic planning of the University of Ioannina, as the field of Environment and Energy is among the directions in which the University has invested and continues to invest, with very positive results in terms of the production of new knowledge and its connection with societal needs.

The subject of the MSc Program is also consistent with the needs of contemporary society, as environmental issues are pressing and concern everyone. From environmental pollution and the forecasting of extreme weather phenomena to the extremely critical issue of climate change, there is a need for the production of new knowledge in the fields of Atmospheric Sciences and the Environment, as well as for the education of new specialized scientists who can contribute, through their knowledge and skills, to addressing these challenges.
